SASKATOON – The nationally No. 2 ranked Calgary Dinos led for over 38 minutes of play as they romped to a 102-68 victory over the No. 8 ranked Saskatchewan Huskies in a top-10 clash inside the PAC.
Calgary was impressive on both ends of the court, knocking down 36 of the 63 shots they attempted as a team while also holding a 45-27 advantage on the glass.
Brett Layton spearheaded a team effort in attack for the Dinos, recording 26 points and 14 rebounds in the victory. Mason Foreman, Ezeoha Santiango, and Noah Wharton also hit double-digits in the game, putting up 18, 13 and 11 points respectively.
Alexander Dewar was on fire for the Huskies, going 9-12 for the field and scoring 28 points.
The first half was the difference on the night.
Calgary went 6-11 from beyond-the-arc, led by three treys from Santiago, in the opening frame to jump out to an early lead that they would never relinquish. A 14-point scoring run to make the score 16-4 allowed the visitors to lead 26-13 after the opening ten minutes.
While the Huskies were able to shut down Calgary's perimeter scoring in the second quarter, Layton came to live. The law student scored ten of his team's 21 points in the frame to send the Dinos into the halftime break with a 47-28 advantage.
The third quarter was by far the strongest of the night from the Huskies as they outscored the Dinos 16-12 in the paint to cut the lead to as few as 15 at one point. That was as close as Saskatchewan would come however as the Dinos were able to run out the remainder of the clock and take the game by a dominant final score line.
With the win Calgary remains undefeated on the season with a perfect conference record of 15-0. Saskatchewan meanwhile falls to 10-5 on the year.
These two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon with a scheduled start time of 7 p.m. inside the PAC. That action can be watched live on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
