SASKATOON – For three quarters of action inside the PAC on Saturday night the No. 8 ranked Saskatchewan Huskies were right with the No. 2 Calgary Dinos. Unfortunately for the home fans that outlying quarter was pivotal, as the Dinos went on to record the 84 to 61 victory.
Outscoring Saskatchewan 27-5 in the second quarter, Calgary fought back from an early lead and jumped out to an unassailable advantage. The Dinos got it done on both ends of the floor in the frame, shooting 60 per cent from the field as a team while also forcing four turnovers and recording three blocks.
Brett Layton was everywhere on the night for Calgary, scoring 30 points and pulling down 14 boards for the double-double. Ezeoha Santiago added another 17 while every Dino in the lineup bar one recorded atleast two points.
Emmanuel Akintunde led the way for Saskatchewan with the fourth-year guard scoring 20 points. Not far behind Akintunde was
Alexander Dewar with an 18-point outing, while
JT Robinson scored 13.
After falling the night before, the Huskies came out gunning in the opening frame. The hosts jumped out to a 12-3 lead and held a 2-16 advantage after the first quarter thanks in large part to eight points from Al. Dewar.
That lead was short-lived however, as the Dinos dominated the second frame. Layton had 10 points in the quarter and the Dinos finished the half on a 23-0 run to build up a 43-25 lead.
While the two teams played evenly the rest of the way, the damage was already done.
With the win Calgary moves to a perfect mark of 16-0 on the season. The Huskies meanwhile, fall to 10-6.
Both of these teams will be back in action next weekend.
Saskatchewan will remain at home for their final regular season games when they take on the UBC Okanagan Heat. Calgary meanwhile will play a home-and-home set with the Alberta Golden Bears, with Edmonton playing host to the opener before the return leg in Calgary on Saturday night.
All of that action can be watched live on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
