After 60 years of being known as the Sled Dog Open, the Dakota Classic was the first varsity meet to be held on a First Nation within the Canada West conference. Competing athletes from Manitoba, Regina, Alberta, and Saskatchewan wore orange singlets during the race, acknowledging and supporting residential school survivors.
The day got started with the women's race, taking student-athletes through the Dakota Dunes Golf Links. In what was an impressive race for the USask women, third-year
Morgan Tiede captured first-place, crossing the finish line with a time of 29:29.6. Closely behind Tiede was
Angelina Beveridge-Warick, who secured a one-two finish for the Dogs after finishing her race three seconds behind her teammate. Alberta's Natalie Boston would round out the podium.
Finishing less than a second off the podium was Brookly Roney, a fourth-year athlete from Moose Jaw, who completed the race with a time of 33:22.4. Three other Huskies earned top-15 placements in
Petra Tymko (11th, 35:32.2),
Samantha Stewart (13th, 36:11.7), and
Attleigh Maloney (14th, 36:18.0).
As a team, Saskatchewan earned a score of 32 points, taking the team title by 14 points over the Alberta Pandas.
In the men's race, Regina's Adonais Downes took the individual title with a tile of 27:09.1 and was followed closely by a pair of Huskies in
Alexander Webster and
Anthony Antaya. Webster crossed the finish line just 13.4 seconds behind the race leader while Antaya earned a second Huskie podium 5.2 seconds later.
Finishing just off the podium was rookie
Bennett Friesen who was making his USask debut.
Kaiden Deck followed Friesen closely, securing four of the top five positions for Saskatchewan student-athletes.
Jayvin Cross Child (12th, 28:22.8) and
Jacob White (14th, 28:37.1) added a pair of top-15 finishes while
Curtis Glanville (17th, 28:46.4) and
Ben House (18th, 28:47.6) completed the race with top-20 finishes.
Recording 26 points as a team, the Huskie men also captured the team title, securing a Saskatchewan sweep in the program's 2025 debut race. The Regina Cougars earned a second-place team finish with 15 points more than the Dogs.
The Huskies next action comes in two weeks time, when the team will travel to Calgary for the Canada West Cross Country Challenge on October 4, 2025.
