Huskies Secure Play for a Cure Win

SASKATOON, Sask. - Bronwyn Boucher scored with 44 seconds remaining in the first period to lead the University of Saskatchewan (USask) Huskie women's hockey team to a 1-0 win over the MacEwan Griffins Friday night (Jan. 31) at Merlis Belsher Place in the Dog's annual "Play for a Cure" game.

Boucher's seventh of the season came thanks to a wrap around effort from the fourth-year product of Sturgeon Country, Alberta. Following a Kendra Zuchotzki shot that was stopped, Boucher grabbed the rebound before beating Griffins goaltender Mikayla Christmann to the opposite post.

Despite the single blemish from Christmann, both netminders were excellent between the pipes Friday night. Saskatchewan goalie Colby Wilson earned the fourth shutout of her 2024-25 season and third against MacEwan, with a 15-save performance on home ice. After a quiet third period, the arts & science student turned aside seven shots in the second and five in the third for the clean sheet.

Wilson's biggest save of the night came early in the third period, when the product of Fort St. James, B.C. was faced with a breakaway from MacEwan's Letta Mattheos. Coming in to Wilson's left, Mattheos made a last-second move towards the five hole before Wilson covered up with her left pad to keep the Dogs ahead.

At the other end of the ice, Christmann was the busier of the two, facing 25 shots and making 24 saves in a tightly contested Canada West East Division matchup.

With the win, the Huskies remain alive in the hunt for the third, and final, playoff position in the East Division. The Dogs are nine points back of the Regina Cougars with five games remaining, needing five wins and help to get into the postseason.

Meanwhile the Griffins suffer their 17th loss of the campaign, falling to 3-17-3 on the season.

The Huskies and Griffins will meet again tomorrow at Merlis Belsher Place, with puck drop for game two of their weekend series set for 5:00 PM.
