SASKATOON, Sask. - Following a 1-0 win for the Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night (Jan. 31), the MacEwan Griffins split the weekend series with the Huskies with a 3-2 shoot-out win in Saturday's (Feb. 1) rematch.
After being unable to get the puck past fourth-year Huskie goaltender
Colby Wilson in Friday night's game, the Griffins were the first on the board Saturday evening. MacEwan's Jennifer Andrash found the top shelf of the Huskies net and recorded her third of the season, assisted by Shaelyn Hopkins (2) at 10:50 in the opening period.
With just under two minutes of play remaining in the first, the Huskies would find themselves at a two-goal deficit. Rian Santos was able to get a stick on Tess Collier's shot from the point and sneak the puck past Wilson, scoring her first goal of the 2024/25 season.
The Griffins held onto their two-goal lead heading into the second, but the Huskies split their lead in half no more than 27 seconds into the period after
Kendra Zuchotzki fired one off on net, and
Bronwyn Boucher was able to seal the deal in front. The goal would be Boucher's sixth power-play goal of the season after she similarly scored her fifth fed from Zuchotzki in Friday's game.
Avery Gottselig would also earn a point off the goal.
The Huskies found their momentum again following the quick goal off the start and proved relentless through the second as they battled back to even out the game. At the 15:57 mark, their efforts paid off, with Jayde Cadieax sending a hard shot at ice level that was able to slip past Brianna Sank into the Griffins net.
Tied 2-2, both teams pushed hard through the third, but both goalies came to play, Wilson making 13 saves and Sank right behind with 12.
Going scoreless in the third, the game was forced into overtime, ultimately leading to a shoot-out after neither team could capitalize on an opportunity in the extra minutes.
Saskatchewan would take their turn first to shoot, with the Griffins to follow. After five rounds of shooters, Shaelyn Hopkins would decide the game for the Griffins, pulling Wilson to the left and finding the right side of the net to secure the win and split the weekend series with the Huskies.
The Huskies are back at home next week and set to take on the No. 2 Nationally Ranked UBC Thunderbirds at Merlis Belsher Place.
