SASKATOON, Sask. - The U SPORTS No. 8-ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies captured a lopsided victory on Friday night (Nov. 8) at Merlis Belsher Place, downing the Trinity Western Spartans 6-1. With the win the Huskies improve to 8-3-0 on the season and remain in a tie for the top spot in the East division while the Spartans drop to 2-7-0.
It was an impressive effort from the Dogs, who saw six different goal scorers in the win while maintaining a steady effort throughout the game, scoring two goals in each period. The home team also won the shot battle, doubling Trinity Western's total with 40 attempts finding the target.
Goaltender
Jordan Kooy followed up his shutout performance last weekend in Manitoba with another steady night, turning aside 19 of the 20 shots he faced. The only one that got by the veteran netminder came on the powerplay, when Trinity Western's Christian Lowe found Samuel May open on the doorstep for a powerplay score.
Kooy now owns a 5-1-0 record this season in addition to the conference's best save percentage (.933) and second-best goals against average (1.83).
Second-year defenceman
Cole Jordan opened the scoring at MBP Friday after receiving a tape-to-tape pass from
Dawson Holt on the Spartan's doorstep for his second of the season. Later in the period
Landon Kosior would send a point shot through traffic and into the back of the net to extend the Huskie lead to two.
Holt, having also picked up an assist on Kosior's score, finished the game with two points, moving into a share of the league-lead with Alberta's Sean Tschigerl at 16 points this season.
In the second it was the Saskatchewan powerplay that was on showcase, scoring twice with goals from
Raphael Pelletier and
Chantz Petruic. Petruic, who finished the 2023-24 season with the second-most points in the conference, moved into a tie for second-place with 13 points thanks to a four-point night (1 G, 3A).
The Dogs closed out the win with a pair first-time goal scorers this season in defencemen
Mac Gross and
Ty Prefontaine, who brought the final score to 6-1.
In total, the Huskies had six different student-athletes record multi-point nights.
