MBB: Dogs Defeated by Bears

SASKATOON, SK – The Saskatchewan Huskies (5-12) fell to the Alberta Golden Bears (12-5) in a hard fought, back-and-forth battle Friday night. The Huskies final weekend at home opened with a 74-83 loss at the PAC. 
 
The Golden Bears came out hot in the first quarter, shooting 55.6% from the field compared the Huskies 25%. The first five minutes started off even with an 11-10 lead held by Alberta – then the Huskies fell further as the Bears went on a 13-2 scoring run to close the quarter off in front 24-12. 
 
The second quarter started out in the hands of the Golden Bears However, the Huskie picked up their offense and came up to a one possession deficit. The fourth-year duo Alexander Dewar and Tyrese Potoma came up clutch for the Dogs 23 points combined. 
 
The starting five for the Huskies consisted of Erwin Loic, Tyrese Potoma, Alexander Dewar, Fisayo Moibi, and Maxwell Amoafo. Down the court, the Golden Bears starters were Lars Ishimwe, Isaac Simon, Brandon Meiklejohn, Abdullah Shittu and Adam Paige.
 
Coach Jamie Campbell made some adjustments during halftime and led a focused Huskie team out to start the second half. The Huskies fought to maintain their one possession trail by shooting 53.3% from beyond the arch with a clutch 3-pointer added by the Dogs sixth man Benjamin Rose
 
Saskatchewan (ranked 13th in CW) kept a close hold on Alberta (ranked 4th place in CW) to force eight lead changes in the third quarter. The Huskies managed to shoot 48.9% from the field compared to the Golden Bears 47.9%. 
 
Fourth quarter changed in pace and was all Golden Bears as they pushed the Huskies on both ends of the court. Although the Huskies remained shooting over 50% from depth, the Golden Bears were on fire at the free throw line. Saskatchewan found themselves in some foul trouble and allowed the Bears to the line 11 times in the second half – Alberta made no mistake and capitalize on the opportunity to add to their lead with a 93.8% shot percentage.
 
Saskatchewan ultimately fell too far for comfort and Alberta took this match-up 83-74. 
 
Leading the Huskies was Alexander Dewar and Tyrese Potoma, with 22 points each while Alberta had 4 players score over 12 points – Lars Ishimwe led the way for them with 18 points of his own.
