WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Wesmen picked a bad time to have one of their worst shooting nights of the past decade. The No. 3-ranked Wesmen men's basketball team shot under 10 per cent from three and struggled to get anything going offensively Friday night, dropping a 56-49 Canada West conference decision to the Saskatchewan Huskies at the Duckworth Centre.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
- Both teams struggled offensively from the start of the game, with the Huskies leading 13-11 after the first quarter. The Wesmen were 0-5 in three-point attempts, while the Huskies made just one of six three point shots, thanks to Chan De Ciman.
- The game picked up a bit in the second quarter but both teams were unable to make much happen.
- Fisayo Moibi made back-to-back threes in the first three minutes of the second half that pushed a modest four-point lead for the Huskies up to 33-23. A gap that, considering the offensive plights of both teams, was not insignificant.
- The Huskies extended their lead to 12 later in the quarter, but the Wesmen were able to chip it down to 37-33 with under two minutes to go in the quarter. Saskatchewan's Chan De Ciman however, dropped the Huskies third triple of the quarter to put it back up to seven points.
- After cutting the lead back down to three in the early stages of the fourth quarter, Winnipeg again stalled out, going without a field goal for the next two minutes.
- Winnipeg's five-game win streak was snapped due, in large part, to a frigid effort from the perimeter. The Wesmen made just 3 of 31 from three, the program's worst three-point shooting night since the Wesmen went 1-for-18 in an 80-63 win over Brandon on Jan. 24, 2015.
THE STATS
- Mikhail Mikhailov's 16 points and 13 rebounds led the Wesmen (7-2), while Alberto Gordo had 15 points.
- Winnipeg was only able to muster eight points from its bench and was outscored 29-8 in that category.
- Emmanuel Bonsu had 10 points off the bench to lead the Huskies. De Ciman and Easton Thimm both chipped in with eight.
THE STANDINGS
The Winnipeg Wesmen remains in a three-way tie for third place in Canada West with Brandon and Manitoba all sitting at 7-2. Saskatchewan improves to 5-4 with the win and a ninth-place spot in the standings.
