MBB: Huskies Finish Year on a High Note with Weekend Sweep of Winnipeg Wesmen

WINNIPEG, MB – Coming off a 56-49 win over the Canada West No. 3 ranked Winnipeg Wesmen on Friday night, the Saskatchewan Huskies looked to continue with that momentum on Saturday in game two of the weekend series. It came down to the wire, but the Huskies headed home with a weekend sweep of the Wesmen, thanks to a 72-69 victory.  
 
THE HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Huskies had a slow start to the game, with the Wesmen outscoring the Dogs 21-15. Winnipeg had the advantage in the first quarter, nabbing 16 rebounds compared to the Huskies 7. 
  • Saskatchewan ramped up shooting in the second quarter however, outscoring the Wesmen 20-8. Alexander Dewar had eight points for the Huskies in the quarter and an outstanding defensive effort shut down Winnipeg's offensive efforts. 
  • The Huskies went into halftime with a 35-29 lead over the Wesmen. 
  • The third quarter mirrored the first, with Winnipeg leading Saskatchewan 21-16. The Wesmen went 83% from the free throw line, and Shawn Maranan put up seven points for the home team. 
  • A close fourth quarter saw the Huskies end with a 21-19 lead. With less than a minute left, the Huskies were down 65-69. Tyrese Potoma ripped down the court on a fastbreak, nabbing a three-pointer to bring the Huskies within one.  Thirty seconds later, Chan De Ciman grabbed the defensive rebound and Kymahni Bent's layup was good for a one-point lead. 
  • The Wesmen fouled De Ciman in the final seconds of the game, and he went 2-for-2 from the line, giving the Huskies the 72-69 win. 
THE STATS
  • Saskatchewan's Emmanuel Bonsu was the leading scorer of the game, with 15 points on the night. He added five rebounds and a steal to his tally. 
  • Leading the way for the Wesmen was Mikhail Mikhailov, with 14 points, 14 rebounds, three blocks and one steal. 
  • Saskatchewan's bench outperformed Winnipeg's, scoring 38 points to Winnipeg's 23. 
  • Ryker Wuttke and Easton Thimm led the Huskies in rebounds with six. 
THE STANDINGS
The win moves the Saskatchewan Huskies up a spot in the Canada West standings, from ninth to eighth place. The Winnipeg Wesmen drop two spots, from third to fifth place, with a 7-3 record heading into the break.
