MSOC: Sixth Annual Bateman Cup Ends in Draw

SASKATOON – The Saskatchewan Huskies and Alberta Golden Bears shared the points in a back-and-forth Bateman Cup on Friday. The hard-fought battle ended in a draw for the second year in a row.

Luke Mackie was able to put the Huskies on the board in the 48th minute. Less than 10 minutes later, Riliand Idrizi responded with a quick goal for the Golden Bears.

First year goal-keeper Jaron Slopinski held the net with three saves while Liam Collens saved five of the six shots he faced on the other side of the pitch.

"Getting points against top teams is crucial in the Canada West division," said Huskie head coach Bryce Chapman. "You can't go with zero points on a day and expect to climb the ladder. If you look at Alberta, they're a very quality side. They're well coached. They've put some really good additions in their lineup this year. You can see, we were very evenly matched. I thought this was a really good test for our guys to go through different momentum swings, be comfortable not having the ball over periods of time, but when we do have the ball you could see that we could generate our own offense. We had plenty of chances to go up two to zero. We didn't take those chances and that's how football ends up with a one-one draw on that."

The Huskies next game will go this Sunday at 2 PM when they host the MacEwan Griffins at Griffiths Stadium in Nutrien Park. Tickets are now available at HuskieTickets.com.
