Golden Bears topple Huskies in top 10 showdown

EDMONTON- The No. 3 University of Alberta Golden Bears defeated the No. 10 University of Saskatchewan Huskies, 89-79, Friday night at the Saville Community Sports Centre.

With the win, Alberta extends their win streak to 13 games and secure their place atop the conference standings and receive a first-round bye in playoffs next weekend. However, the Huskies now cement their place outside the top four, meaning they will not receive a bye in the first round of playoffs, but will get home-court advantage in a play-in game.

Leading the way to victory was senior forward and captain Brody Clarke with 21 points and seven rebounds. Not far behind was second-year forward Adam Paige with 14 points and seven rebounds while second-year guard Geoffery James scored 13 points, while shooting 100% from the line.

The Huskies received a stellar performance from their senior guard JT Robinson, who finished the night with a game-high 25 points. Fellow guard Alexander Dewar finished with 11 points on the scoresheet.

The Huskies were able to open the scoring when third-year forward Maxwell Amoafo earned two shots when Bears senior forward Cole Knudsen's committed a foul under the rim. Amoafo went one for two, giving the Huskies their one and only lead of the night, as the home side put up 21 points compared to the Huskies' eight in the opening frame.

The second quarter was a much closer affair, with both teams scoring 20 in the quarter. However, the Huskies were unable to erase the 13-point lead Alberta had created in the first, and still trailed 41-28 heading into the locker room.

The remainder of the night seemed to be all Bears, increasing their advantage and moving that lead to 26 in the third quarter.

However, with a newly-lit fire, it was all Huskies in the final frame, outscoring the hosts 32-17, with Robinson scoring 11 of his game-leading 25 points. Even with the effort, the Bears were still too much to handle on the night, holding onto a 10-point lead and securing the win.

Both teams will meet again tomorrow night at approximately 8:00 P.M. to close out their regular season schedules.
