CALGARY – Picking up where they left off, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies completed the sweep over the Calgary Dinos with a 2-1 win in double overtime, Saturday night at the Father David Bauer Arena.
Bailee Bourassa played the hero in overtime, while Kayla Kirwan scored her second goal in as many nights for the Huskies.
Jessica Vance recorded her second win of the season with a 20 save outing.
The first period looked very similar to last night, with the Dinos getting heavily outshot and the game remaining scoreless.
Through 20 minutes, the Huskies outshot the Dinos 13-2. The best chance for either side came off the stick of Huskies leading scorer, Leah Bohlken, but her chance on the rush was stymied by Dinos goaltender Kelsey Roberts.
Despite a Huskies power play chance halfway through the second, it was the Dinos who kicked off the scoring.
Assistant captain Sara Craven hammered home a perfect back-door feed from linemate Holly Reuther, making it 1-0, on her first tally of the season. Breakout first year forward Elizabeth Lang picked up the second assist, extending her point streak to four games.
After 40 minutes, the Dinos held the one goal lead, despite being outshot 21-5.
Kirwan would bring the Huskies back on level terms early in the third period when she potted a goal after a goalmouth scramble.
A back-and-forth final frame was capped off by a dazzling save from Huskies netminder Jessica Vance, who robbed Chelsea Court blind, sprawling back to get her glove on a chance on the goal line. Despite the game opening up, the stalemate continued into overtime.
With nothing solved through 65 minutes, the Huskies late in double overtime capitalized following a wild scramble. Forward Bailee Bourassa took off from her own blue line with a clean breakaway, and beat Roberts up over her glove to complete the weekend sweep.
The Huskies will jump back on the road next weekend to take on the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
