SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskie men's hockey team will return home to play their first game inside Merlis Belsher Place, a brand-new state of the art facility which will serve as the programs home for years to come.
The team will be well-rested after a week off following a western road swing where they battled against the defending Canada West and National Champion Alberta Golden Bears. They came away with a series split following a 5-2 win on Saturday, Sept. 29, and a 5-1 loss on Sunday Sept. 30.
Meanwhile, the Calgary Dinos opened up their season with a series split of their own after recording a 5-2 win over the Manitoba Bisons, which was followed up with a 5-3 loss at the hands of the Bisons the following night.
5 Things
1: Friday's matchup will serve as the first game at the brand new Merlis Belsher Place for the men's hockey team.
2: This weekend will also serve as the first meeting between the teams since last season's Canada West semi-final, where the Huskies defeated the Dinos two games to one in the best-of-three series, which was capped off by
Carson Stadnyk's epic game winning goal with only 24 seconds remaining in the game, which also qualified the Huskies for the University Cup.
3: Huskies forward
Kohl Bauml had a phenomenal opening weekend as he chipped in a goal and two assists during the team's road series against the Alberta Golden Bears. Bauml earned last week's Huskie of the Week in recognition of his play.
4: This weekend will mark the beginning of a five-game home stand for the Huskies, as they will battle the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Oct. 20 & 20 at Merlis Belsher Place, as well as playing the first half of a home & home against the Regina Cougars in Saskatoon.
5: Moving on from the Huskies program following the 2017-18 season are
Jordon Cooke,
Connor Cox,
Kendall McFaull and
Josh Roach, who each graduated from the University of Saskatchewan and are all setting their sights on professional hockey in Europe.
By the Numbers:
3 – The Huskies enter the series against Calgary ranked as the number three ranked team in the nation.
6 – The Huskies received goals from six different players over the course of the weekend.
8 – The 2018-2019 Saskatchewan roster will be infused with youth as eight players on the team are first-year Huskies.
483 –
Dave Adolph will be looking to build upon his U SPORTS all-time coaching record of 482 wins, as he will look to pick up his 483rd win and first inside Merlis Belsher Place on Friday night.
Scouting the Dinos
Entering the weekend with a 1-1 record, Calgary appear set to make another run towards a Canada West playoff appearance.
The Dinos narrowly missed out on being ranked inside this week's U SPORTS top ten, as they received 25 votes.
Through one weekend of play, Dinos forwards Riley Sheen and Cain Franson sit in a tie at the top of the Canada West with four points through two games.
