LATE MOUNT ROYAL GOAL SINKS HUSKIES

Box Score

Calgary — For the second night in a row, the Mount Royal University Cougars scored a clutch goal in the final minutes to propel them to a 2-1 win and weekend sweep of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

Tyler Fiddler's goal in the midst of a scrum with 39.4 seconds left broke a 1-1 deadlock and gave the team the win.

Box Score

The first period featured a handful of rushes for both teams, but the goaltenders stood tall.

Saskatchewan couldn't convert on their two powerplay attempts as Mount Royal's penalty kill, which is the best in the CIS, stifled all attempts. Shots finished 8-3 Mount Royal at the end of one.

Mount Royal was not able to convert on their three powerplay chances in the second, but they would strike first at even strength. After back-to-back icings against the Huskies, Jeff Barrett won the faceoff back to Scott McKay, who fired a waist-high shot on net. Sebastian Pare was alone in front and able to deflect the puck down past Jordon Cooke.

With just under four minutes left in the second, the Huskies evened things up with a  bizarre goal. Craig McCallum fired a knucklepuck from the point that dove at the last second and may have deflected off a Cougar defender to elude Cam Lanigan.

The third period was highlighted by Mount Royal's Lanigan, who made several acrobatic saves including some highlight reel-worthy ones when the game was on the line late. The Cougars also had to kill off a 5-on-3 for 33 seconds and it even yielded a chance with a two-on-one rush for the team.

With offense hard to come by, coach Bert Gilling reunited Matt Brown, Cody Cartier and Tyler Fiddler, all who are in the top ten in Canada West scoring, in the late parts of the third. Cooke made several strong saves in front of the Mount Royal net, but Mount Royal's persistence paid off as Fiddler was able to knock the puck in.

Final shots were 16-16 and neither team could convert on the powerplay, seeing the Cougars go 0-5 and the Huskies 0-7.

Mount Royal heads into the Christmas break with a 12-6 record and sole possession of third in Canada West, but still on the heels of Alberta and Calgary. The Cougars have just one game outside of Calgary in the new semester, so the had part of the schedule s out of the way. Saskatchewan falls to 8-9-1 and pick up just one point on this weekend's roadtrip.
