DINOS SWEEP HUSKIES

Box Score

CALGARY – Spencer Edward's go-ahead goal in the third period propelled the No. 6 University of Calgary Dinos to their third straight sweep, 2-1, over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday night at the Father David Bauer Arena.

Outshot for the second-straight night, the Dinos used timely scoring and strong goaltending en route to a sixth straight win. Jacob DeSerres stopped 28 shots in the Calgary net – a season-high for the former Saint John Sea Dog.

Box Score

The Dinos improve their record to 8-2-0 as they finish a busy part of their schedule that saw them play a large portion of home games. The Huskies drop to 4-6-0 on the year after jumping out of the gate on a four game win streak.

Caught in another tight and hard fought game, neither team was able to come out of the first period with a goal. In a battle of reigning goaltenders of the year from the CIS and Canadian Hockey League, DeSerres made four stops for Calgary, while Jordon Cooke turned away 8 shots in the opening frame.

Calgary netted the game's first goal eight minutes into the second period. Taking the puck around the back of the net, Chris Collins tucked a wraparound attempt on the far side of the crease for his fifth tally of the year.

Both teams continued to play the game like a chess match, but it was Saskatchewan who potted the next goal with one minute left in the stanza. After the Dinos defence was unable to clear the puck, Jesse Ross grabbed possession and floated a shot past the Calgary netminder. The goal was the fourth of the season by Ross.

Capitalizing early in the third, the Dinos scored an important marker to go back in front. From the left side boards, Kodie Curran tossed a pass across to Edwards. The Calgary assistant captain was left alone in front of the blue paint where he registered his second of the season.

The Huskies best opportunity to tie the game came during a wild sequence half way through the third. Josh Roach's initial attempt was denied by DeSerres but set up two more opportunities by Craig McCallum. The Saskatchewan forward had a shot blocked as well as another robbed on a split save by the Calgary goaltender to keep the score at 2-1.

The Huskies pulled their netminder in the final minute of the game but were unable to generate any scoring chances. The best opportunities came at the other end as the Dinos missed a pair of empty nets.

Saskatchewan outshot Calgary 29-19. The Dinos went 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Huskies went 0-for-2.

Next weekend, the Dinos travel to Vancouver for two games against the UBC Thunderbirds from Nov. 7-8.

The Huskies return home next week where they will host the Mount Royal Cougars.
