Two-time U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Coach of the Year Steve Kook took over as head coach of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's hockey program in 2005-06.
The first-ever full-time women’s hockey coach at the University of Saskatchewan, Kook guided the Huskies to their first-ever Canada West Championship and a bronze medal finish at the U SPORTS National Championship in 2013-14. It was the first medal won by the program on the national stage.
Kook joined the Huskies in 2005-06 as a part-time coach after working as an assistant coach with Donna Raeburn in 2004-05. His 190 regular season wins, 11 Canada West playoff wins and three wins at the U SPORTS National Championship are all program records.
A graduate of the University of Saskatchewan’s commerce program, Kook has won the Canada West Coach of the Year award three times (2007-08, 2009-10 and 2013-14), the U SPORTS award twice (2009-10 and 2013-14) and the Huskie Athletics Coach of the Year award three times (2007-08, 2009-10 and 2013-14). He has had 27 players named Canada West All-Stars and two conference MVPs.
Working with Saskatchewan Hockey, Kook coached the province’s entry at the 2012 Female U18 National Championships in Dawson Creek, BC. He was also co-coach of the gold medal team at the senior women’s championship in 2001, and in 2005 was general manager for the U18 Team Saskatchewan.
Prior to joining the Huskies, Kook was the head coach of the SAIT Women’s Hockey Program in Calgary from 2002-04. He also spent two years coaching minor hockey’s female division in Calgary and four years doing the same in Saskatoon.
