Huskies Drop Barnburner in Highest Scoring Game in Program History

CALGARY, Alta. – Brooklyn Anderson netted the game-winner in the shootout to help power the University of Calgary Dinos to a thrilling 7-6 win of Saskatchewan in an obvious candidate for U SPORTS game of the year.

The Dinos did not lead until their final round in the shootout and trailed 5-2 in the third period, only to storm back with four goals in the third to force overtime before walking away with the thrilling win.

The win is the third in a row as the Dinos have now won five of seven in the new year and now sit at 16-5-4 on the year. They are also just one game back of a tie for first place with three games to go.

Saskatchewan drops to 10-9-6 with the loss and still sits at 26 points - tied with Manitoba for the third and final playoff spot in the East Division. Both teams still have three games to play.

With playoff positioning on the line for both teams, it was the Huskies that came out and set the tone early in this one. Jacquelyne Chief opened up the scoring for the game with her first of the year just 3:55 into this one to get the goal-scoring party going early. A powerplay goal from Evelyn Lawrence tied things up just a few minutes later before Avery Gottselig scored on the man advantage as Saskatchewan finished the first with a 2-1 lead.

Things were mostly quiet in the second until a flurry of goals were scored in the final 3:15 of the frame. Peppi Virtanen scored unassisted on the power play and Kahlen Wisener potted another just two minutes later to quickly make this a 4-1 lead for the visitors.

Brooklin Fry blasted one home from the top of the zone with just 18 seconds left in the second to give the Dinos some life heading into the break.

The third period was a flurry of chaos.

Wisener tallied her team-leading eighth of the year early to once again give the Huskies a three-goal cushion.

Calgary's desperation mode went into overdrive and paid off, as Kyla Mitenko, Josie McLeod and Jess Marten all found the back of the net to tie this one up at 5-5 with just under five minutes remaining.

Paris Oleksyn flipped the momentum back the visitors' direction by scoring with just 90 seconds left, only to see Calgary's hero of the night in Anderson score her eighth of the year with just 32 seconds left to nearly blow the roof off Father David Bauer Arena.

Both Clara Juca and Amelia Awad made highlight saves in overtime to set up the shootout. Both goalkeepers kept things tied through the first two rounds before Anderson was able to find the back of the net in the third round and Awad made another save to give Calgary the wild win.

Awad finished making 28 saves and moves to 12-3 on the year in the net for the Dinos, while Juca tallied 26 saves in the loss.

The Huskies and Dinos look to face off again at Father David Bauer Arena Saturday at 5 p.m. on "Senior Day" for the Dinos, with their senior class recognized on the ice prior to the final home game of the regular season.
