SASKATOON, Sask. – The 1971-72 University of Saskatchewan Huskie women's basketball team has company.
With an 84-54 victory Saturday night (Feb. 7) against the Winnipeg Wesmen, the Saskatchewan Huskies capped off an undefeated season, becoming just the second squad in program history to do so.
The victory not only marks an impressive achievement in program history, but also Canadian university women's basketball history. The 2025-26 Huskies are the 17th Canada West and 65th U SPORTS team to record an undefeated season.
In the history of USask athletics, they are just the seventh team to go lossless in the regular season. They join the 2003 and 2005 Huskie Football teams, the 1985-86 and 1986-87 Men's Volleyball teams and the 1974-75 Women's Volleyball team in addition to the 1971-72 Women's Basketball team.
In addition to the flawless season, Saskatchewan also extends their overall undefeated streak to a remarkable 50 games, tying the fourth-longest streak in Canadian university women's basketball.
For the second consecutive night, the Huskies set the tone early, holding Winnipeg to just eight points in the opening frame and building a 17-8 lead. The visitors struggled to find rhythm offensively, once again turning the ball over early and shooting just 23% from the field.
The second proved to be much more closely contested, with the Huskies edging the Wesmen 15-14 to take a 32-22 lead into the half. Both teams were efficient offensively, shooting 50% from the field and 33% from beyond the arc.
The game decisively tilted in Saskatchewan's favor in the third quarter. The Dogs erupted for 26 points in the frame, fueled by efficient shooting and depth scoring.
That trend continued into the fourth quarter, as the bench contributed key minutes and extended the lead to as many as 30 points. Saskatchewan closed the contest with a strong defensive stand, allowing just 14 points in the final quarter to solidify their perfect regular season.
Ella Murphy Wiebe was a steady presence throughout, finishing with 14 points and seven rebounds, while
Maya Flindall led all scorers with 17 points on an efficient 7-of-10 shooting performance.
Andrea Dodig was everywhere on the floor, contributing 11 points, four assists, and three steals to help Saskatchewan control the pace.
Winnipeg showed brief flashes of life behind Jennifer Kallon, who led all scorers on her team with 16 points, thanks in part to three three-pointers, while Jazmin Birch chipped in eight points and three rebounds, and Carmen Hiebert provided a physical presence inside with 10 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks. However, Winnipeg's 25 turnovers and 35.4 percent shooting proved too much to overcome.
Saskatchewan now turns their attention to the 2026 Canada West playoffs and one of the Mount Royal Cougars of Fraser Valley Cascades, who battle Friday night (Feb. 13) for the right to take on the Huskies in the quarterfinals Saturday (Feb. 14) at 5:00 PM.
