SASKATOON, Sask. - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies were all gas Saturday (Jan. 31) night, rolling past the UFV Cascades in straight sets to close out the weekend series at the Physical Activity Complex.
After a gritty, back and forth opening set that saw the Huskies edge UFV 29–27, Saskatchewan took full control. The green and white turned up the pressure in the second, cruising to a 25–18 win, before slamming the door with a 25–21 third set finish to complete the sweep.
The Huskies' offense was relentless, led by
Isaiah Mamer and
Emmett Graham, who each poured in 15 points. Mamer was locked in all night, finishing with 14 kills on a .440 hitting percentage, while Graham matched him with 14 kills of his own, hitting .455 and dropping three service aces.
Jacob Baird was a problem at the net, throwing up three solo blocks and adding seven kills to finish with 11 points.
Aaron Elser chipped in six kills and two aces, while
Noah Opseth ran a smooth offense, dishing out 35 assists and adding six digs.
Saskatchewan controlled the match from start to finish, hitting .271 as a team while stacking up 44 kills and eight service aces, keeping UFV on its heels throughout the night.
For the Cascades, Roan McCarthy led the way with six kills and three aces, while Steven Yarad was efficient in limited action, hitting .714. UFV finished with 25 kills but couldn't keep pace once the Huskies found their rhythm.
With the win, Saskatchewan improves to 9–9 in conference play and keeps the momentum rolling as the Canada West playoff race tightens. The Huskies now hit the road next weekend (Feb. 6–7), heading west for a showdown with the Trinity Western Spartans.
