SASKATOON, Sask. – The University of Saskatchewan (USask) Huskie Women's soccer team got back in the win column Saturday afternoon after a difficult start to the season, defeating the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 3-1 thanks to a dominant second half of play.
With the Win, the Dogs pick up their first victory of the season and improve to 1-2-0 while the Pronghorns drop to 0-2-1.
The Huskies got off to their best start of the season Saturday at Griffiths, scoring just three minutes into the match to take an early lead. Rookie
Isabelle Lachance, who scored her first career U SPORTS goal last weekend, sent a perfect centering pass to
Danielle Lehmann who redirected the ball past the diving Lethbridge keeper.
Despite the fast start and controlling play of Saskatchewan, Lethbridge would capitalize on their first real chance of the game just over 17 minutes later. After getting the ball deep into the USask zone, the Pronghorns received a corner kick opportunity. Kiandra Boulter sent a beautiful ball which found Lisa Popp who redirected the ball for a tying header goal.
Despite Lethbridge tying the game, the Dogs would regain control of both possession and momentum, with the majority of playing occurring at Lethbridge's end of the pitch.
The Dogs best chance to retake the lead came in the in the 34
th minute when
Jenna Steacy found
Cheyenne Lehmann streaking towards the net. After a near-perfect centering pass from Steacy, Lehmann missed wide on a header attempt by mere inches.
Coming out for the second half of action, Saskatchewan picked up right where they left off pressuring the Pronghorns on their own side of the pitch.
In a 10-minute stretch the Huskies saw scoring chances from
Alyssa D'Agnone,
Cassidy Vieira,
Madison Mayert, and a pair from
Sophia Piast, with each one coming agonizingly close to giving Saskatchewan the lead.
Despite the flurry of chances, Lethbridge goalkeeper Kate Prince held strong in goal before finishing the match with nine saves in an outstanding individual performance.
In the 78
th minute it appeared that after being seemingly due for a score, the Dogs finally broke through on a free kick which led to a header in the back the net but the score was denied due to an offside call.
Eight minutes later Cassidy Vieria finally broke the tie with a blistering shot off the hands of a diving Prince for her first career U SPORTS strike.
Vieira doubled down just minutes later, extending the USask lead from 20 yards out after
Tia Lecox found the rookie midfielder, securing the 3-1 victory.
The Dogs will return to the pitch at Griffiths Stadium Sunday afternoon for a rematch with the Pronghorns and their final meeting of the 2025 season. Tickets are available at
