PREVIEW: Top 10 Teams Meet at Griffiths in USask Homecoming 2025

SASKATOON, Sask. - In the first of two meetings this season, the U SPORTS No. 7-ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies and the No. 8-ranked University of British Columbia Thunderbirds will do battle at Griffiths Stadium in USask's 2025 Homecoming game, presented by Original 16.

Ranked as the No. 1 (Sask) and No. 4 (UBC) teams in the conference's preseason coaches poll, the two teams recently squared off in an exhibition matchup at Griffiths which saw the Dogs take an 18-2 halftime lead before the game was called due to weather.

Prior to their preseason meeting, the Huskies and Thunderbirds had most recently met in the 2024 Canada West semifinals. The Huskies escaped Vancouver last November with a 38-33 victory to advance to the Hardy Cup after scoring fifteen unanswered, fourth quarter points which featured a pair of touchdowns and a recovered onside kick in the final minute.

Now the rivals face off in the conference's lone Week Two matchup between 1-0 teams. The Huskies are coming off a 29-20 victory over the Alberta Golden Bears which saw Ryker Frank score twice, Anton Amundrud throw for 245 yards and 3 touchdowns, and Seth Hundeby record his first career interception before taking it to the house. For the T-Birds, their season-opener saw the team capture a 21-9 victory over the Manitoba Bisons thanks to a strong performance from Eastern Michigan University transfer quarterback Drew Viotto who went 20-of-29 for 230 yards and a pair of majors.

History would say fans are in for a high-scoring affair when the two teams take the field at Griffiths. In the previous ten meetings, the Huskies and Thunderbirds have averaged 59 combined points per game with only one contest seeing fewer than 35. Of those 10 meetings, Saskatchewan has take seven, including all three postseason meetings (two Hardy Cups, one semifinal).

Saskatchewan and UBC will meet again later this season in Vancouver in Week Seven (Oct. 17) as the conference heads towards the 2025 playoffs.
