Looking Ahead
Week five's showdown will serve as the lone meeting between the Huskies and Dinos in the 2025 regular season, and first since Saskatchewan visited McMahon Stadium in the final week of the campaign a year ago. The previous clash between the two teams saw a 4-3 Huskie team hand the 2-5 Dinos a 16-11 home loss thanks to a four-yard rushing touchdown from
Ryker Frank with seven seconds remaining in the game.
The two teams now go head-to-head at a critical time in the 2025 season, with five of the six teams in the conference separated by just a single game. After last Friday's win over the Rams, the Huskies find themselves at the top of the standings with a 3-1 record while the Dinos sit fourth with a record of 2-2, the same as both the Bisons and Thunderbirds.
In the Dinos, the Huskies will face off with a very different team than they did just last year, with Calgary sporting several new starters including starting quarterback David Jordan (894 yds, 4 TDs, 3 INTs), running back Eri Olarubofin (276 yds, 1 TD), and leading receiver Zion Grant (225 yds, 1 TD). The team also saw 2024 U SPORTS Defensive Player of the Year and starting safety Nate Beauchemin depart for the CFL in a offseason which ended with over 50 newcomers added to the roster. Despite being such a young group, the Dinos have proved to be a difficult out through four weeks this season, taking the Rams to overtime in their season-opener before playing three straight games decided by a single possession.
For the Huskies, this weekend will provide another test early in the season as the team heads back on the road for the first time since suffering their first loss of the campaign in Manitoba. Fortunately, the Saskatchewan defence might be coming off their best performance of the season thus far. In the 22-20 win against Regina, the Huskies forced two fourth-quarter turnovers—their seventh and eighth of the season—while holding the conference's top-ranked offence at the time scoreless in the final frame. The defence also held the second-leading rusher in the nation in Marshall Erichsen to just 4.5 yards per carry and Regina's passing attack to under 200 yards through the air.
Offensively, the Huskies will look to continue their strong start to the season in which the team ranks second in both points per game (30.5) and yards per game (430.0). The weekend also offers the chance for Saskatchewan running back
Ryker Frank to make program history for the second time in his career. After claiming the Huskie record for rushing touchdowns a season ago, the fifth-year back from Regina can secure the record for career total touchdowns after tying former Huskie ball carriers Terry Eisler and Colton Klassen with his 30th trip to the endzone last week.
