EDMONTON, Alta. - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies suffered a second consecutive 1-0 defeat Sunday afternoon (Sept. 14), falling to the MacEwan Griffins in a tightly-contested road match.
With the loss, the Huskies fall to 2-4-0 and now find themselves five points behind the Alberta Pandas for the fourth and final playoff position in the Canada West Prairie Division. For the Griffins, the win lifts the team to 4-2-0.
Despite the first half ending in a scoreless draw, both teams were able to generate scoring chances. Saskatchewan's best chance for a tally came in the 41st minute, when fifth-year striker
Alyssa D'Agnone beat everyone but her shot hit the post and deflected out of danger.
In the second half, it took the Griffins just five minutes to break the draw when Griffin forward Grace Mwasalla beat Huskie goalkeeper
Kalin Roberts with a header. The score would prove to be the game winner as neither team was able to add to the match scoring.
Saskatchewan would press for the equalizer, outshooting the Griffins 7-5 in the second half, but MacEwan keeper Sabrina Alexander would make five saves for the clean sheet. At the other end of the pitch, Roberts finished the match with five saves of her own.
MacEwan overcame the late Huskie pressure, securing a win in the first meeting between the two programs this season. Saskatchewan will host the Griffins later this season at Griffiths Stadium.
The Dogs now turn their attention to the Manitoba Bisons, with the team set to travel to Winnipeg for back-to-back matches next weekend.
