SASKATOON, Sask. - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies held the visiting Brandon University Bobcats to just six points in the opening set and 23 total in Friday night's straight-sets win at the Physical Activity Complex. It was as lopsided a victory as they come, with the Huskies converting on 35% of their 80 attacks to improve to 4-3 while the Bobcats recorded a hitting percentage of -0.022 to fall to 0-5. Set scores were 25-6, 25-16, and 25-17 in favour of the Dogs.
The Huskies opened up the match with a 9-2 run before allowing just four points against while recording scoring runs of six and eight unanswered points to take a 23-6 lead. A kill from
Keely Anderson and an ace from Haley Poirer then allowed the Huskies to take a 1-0 advantage.
The second frame saw the Huskies jump out to another early lead before stretching their advantage to 16-6. From there the visiting team put together a respectable response, taking six of the next four points. It proved to be too little, too late however as Saskatchewan secured a 25-16 set win.
The third started off with a back-and-forth effort from the Huskies and Bobcats, coming to a 9-9 tie before the Dogs decided to pull away taking four of the next five and eventually recording a seven-point scoring streak to solidify their straight-sets victory.
In a match which saw a complete team effort from the starting lineup,
Keely Anderson led the Huskies with 12 points in the win thanks to 10 kills an ace and a block.
Rosetta Cyr and
Taryn Hannah followed closely behind with nine each while
Jessica Bergstrom recorded 7.5.
The Huskies and Bobcats return to the Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court tomorrow afternoon, with the first serve of the rematch set for 4:30 PM.
