PLAYOFF PREVIEW: Top-Ranked Huskie Defence Looks to Ground Thunderbirds in Playoff Rematch

SASKATOON, Sask. - For the fifth time in the last seven years, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies and the UBC Thunderbirds will meet in the Canada West postseason. Similarly to four of those meetings, Saturday's contest will also feature a trip to the Hardy Cup on the line.

Kickoff is set for 2:00 PM Saturday afternoon at Griffiths Stadium in Nutrien Park, where the Huskies will look to secure a win and host their second consecutive conference championship. Tickets are available at HuskieTickets.com. Fans can also tune in at CanadaWest.tv, or listen live at HuskieFAN.ca.

The 7-1 Saskatchewan Huskies and 3-5 UBC Thunderbirds will add a 15th chapter to their storied postseason rivalry on Saturday at 2:00 PM. Last season Saskatchewan handed UBC a home semifinal loss after scoring 14 points in the final minute to advance to the 87th Hardy Cup with a 38-33 win.

Since last year's postseason meeting, the Huskies and T-Birds have met twice in 2025—not including a preseason game which was called at halftime with the Dogs up 18-2. Their week two meeting saw the Huskies roll to a 51-14 Homecoming win in convincing fashion. UBC was held to just 11 rushing yards and crossed the 55-yard line on just two of their 16 possessions. Six weeks later, the two teams met again at Thunderbird Stadium. It was another outstanding defensive performance from Saskatchewan that led the visitors to a 24-10 win. The USask defence pressured UBC pivot Drew Viotto all day, recording four sacks and once again limiting the Thunderbirds to their own side of midfield on 11 of their 15 possessions.

Each contest between the rivals reflected larger season trends, with the Saskatchewan defence outplaying their counterparts and coming up with timely plays to keep their opponent out of the endzone. Both games saw the T-Bird defence struggle at times to slow down the Huskies while their own offence fought to limit penalties and produce consistent positive plays.

The Huskies have had one of the top defensive units all season, leading the conference in points against per game (17.9, 5th in U SPORTS), interceptions (7), forced fumbles (9), and sacks (18, 6th in U SPORTS). They are also the lone Canada West team with two defensive scores in 2025. The unit is led by a relentless linebacker duo in All-Canadian Seth Hundeby (8th in total tackles, 1st in TFLs, 1st in FF, T-1st in INTs) and second-year Jacob Goldstone (1st in total tackles), along with a pair of stellar defensive lineman in Charlie Parks (1st in sacks, 1st in TFLs) and Reece McCormick (7th in sacks, 7th in TFLs).

Hundeby, Goldstone, Parks, McCormick, and the rest of the Huskie defence will once again look to limit a UBC offence that, while inconsistent, has shown an ability to be explosive in critical moments. Led by Viotto—the conference leading passer with 1,984 yards—the T-Birds have fielded one of the most prolific passing offences down the stretch. On the ground however, they are producing just 72.4 yards per game—the second-lowest in the nation.

Saskatchewan will look to a pair of veteran playmakers to lead them back to the conference title game in receiver Daniel Wiebe and running back Ryker Frank. Wiebe enters the contest as one of the most productive pass catchers in the country, finishing the regular season with the second-most yards (926) and most receiving touchdowns (11) in U SPORTS. In Frank, the Huskies possess one of the best dual-threat backs in the nation, with the fifth-year Regina product finishing second in Canada West in rushing yards (723), and first in receiving yards (276) among the top-25 running backs in U SPORTS.

The duo—along with the rest of the Huskie offence—should have another productive day at Griffiths, as they are set to face off against the worst defence in Canada West in both points against (30.6) and yards against (454.0) per game.
