Huskies Look to Bounce Back in Regina

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies (0-1) will hit the field Friday in Regina night looking to kick off the 2024 U-Prairie Challenge with a victory over the Regina Rams (1-0). Their Week 2 matchup is the first of two between the two teams this season, with the pair due for a rematch at Griffiths Stadium on October 19. In two meetings last season the Dogs were perfect against the rams, dominating both games and outscoring the Rams 83-17.

Saskatchewan enters Friday coming off an uncharacteristic loss to the Manitoba Bisons on opening weekend, which saw the home Bisons earn a 37-24 victory. The game saw the Bisons jump out to a commanding 22-0 first quarter lead before back-to-back passing touchdowns from Anton Amundrud gave the Huskie offence life. Ultimately, a third quarter fumble would halt any momentum towards a comeback and the Huskies left the field with their first loss to Manitoba since 2019.

While it was a disappointing game in the end, the Huskies still enter this week with plenty to be optimistic about. Despite the loss the Saskatchewan offence saw several promising performances, including one from veteran receiver Daniel Wiebe who set new career-highs with 11 catches for 202 yards and a major. At quarterback, Anton Amundrud threw for 356 yards and recorded three total touchdowns while only being sacked once. On defence, the Huskie secondary impressed, limiting the Manitoba passing attack and field general Jackson Tachinksi to just 156 yards through the air.

Meanwhile, for the Regina Rams (1-0) they will be looking to open the season with back-to-back wins after defeating the Calgary Dinos to open their season last weekend. The Rams controlled their season-opener in Calgary, building a 16-2 lead headed into the fourth quarter before holding off a last-minute Calgary comeback attempt.

In their season opener, the Regina front seven impressed, holding the Calgary rushing attack to just 30 total yards on the ground. The secondary however, should have Saskatchewan coaches looking to get the ball into the hands of their receivers, with the Rams giving up 256 passing yards and two touchdowns on just 18 completions.

On the other side of the ball, the Huskie offence will be tasked with stopping quarterback Noah Pelletier after it was announced that reigning 2023 Canada West Rookie of the Year, Owen Sieben was out after suffering a concussion in the Ram's season-opener.

The Stats:
    1. The Huskies currently possess an 8-game winning streak over the Rams, with their last loss coming in 2017.
    2. The Rams and Huskies enter Friday tied in the CW offensive standings, averaging 24.0 PPG each.
    3. Anton Amundrud ranks 2nd in U SPORTS with 356.0 YPG, trailing only UBC's Garrett Rooker with 375.0.
    4. Daniel Wiebe leads all receivers in the country with 202 yards.
    5. Lane Novak ranks 1st in CW and 9th in U SPORTS with 8.0 tackles/game.
