EDMONTON, Alta. - Two first half scores led the Alberta Golden Bears to a 2-0 victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies on a chilly Sunday afternoon at Foote Field.
Alberta's Ridlind Idrizi led the Bears in a strong offensive effort, helping outshooting the Huskies 17-3 (8-1 on target) and recording the game's first goal. Golden Bear Caden Ruby was the benefactor an Idrizi assist, scoring the home team's second first half goal. Goalkeeper Liam Collens recorded his fifth clean sheet of the year.
The win moves the Bears to 7-1-2 and extends thei lead over the Prairie Division. The Huskies meanwhile move to 3-8-0 on the year.
The game got off to a crawling start, owing a lot to the chilly and inclement weather at kickoff, and while there were seven combined shots at the first third mark, most were quite ambitious tries from distance. That is, until the 28th minute when Bears captain Jake Bosch carried the ball from just inside the half all the way inside the box and laid a great pass to Idrizi who scored to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Just before the half Idrizi found an open Ruby in the box who recorded his second goal in as many days. The Bears would head into the half with a 2-0 advantage.
The second half saw the Bears control possession for the vast majority of the period and only allowed one shot on target. This shot, however, was the best chance either side would see as a the Godlen Bear goalkeeper would overshoot a ball which led to a wide open net chance for Alessandro Calado, who put it between the sticks but was dramatically saved by Bears defender Thomas Hope who was able to clear the danger and keep the clean sheet alive. They would clock the rest of the half out en route to a 2-0 victory.
