CALGARY, Alta. - The Huskies were back in action on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 25), taking on the Mount Royal Cougars to close out the opening weekend of the 2024 season. Despite a strong second half the dogs were unable to come away with the win, seeing their comeback attempt fall short and a final score of 2-1.
The match opened with a quick strike by the opposing team, with Mount Royal's Finn Marshall scoring the first goal in the 6th minute. With the momentum of the game's first goal, the Cougars pressed the attack but sound defensive play from the dogs limited the early damage.
Coming out for the second half, the Huskies once again saw an early rush turn into a goal for the home team when David Dudek found the back of the net to put the Cougars up 2-0. The celebration was short lived however, as the Huskies were awarded a penalty kick just over a minute later.
Ethan Cabral would step in to take the kick, converting for the Huskies first goal of the 2024 season.
With the Huskies looking for the equalizer and the Cougars searching for a win, play picked up at both ends of the pitch. Despite a strong effort from the green and white, the Mount Royal defence held and the home team would take the win 2-1.

Ethan Cabral officially kicked off the new season for the Huskies, scoring the team's first goal of the campaign and the fourth-year's fifth of his career.
