WBB: Huskies Face First Loss of the Season

SASKATOON, SK – After spending the previous few weekends on the road, the Saskatchewan Huskies headed into the weekend ready to finally play some basketball on their home court, their last hurrah at home this season. Unfortunately, it was not their night at home, facing their first loss of the season. The Cougars would break the Huskies 16-game winning streak with a 69-62 defeat.

THE HIGHLIGHTS

  • The two teams would go almost basket for basket, having four lead exchanges in the first quarter. Tied at 13 at 3:30, Regina would take the lead and proceed to a scoring run to make it 21-13. The Huskies were able to get in one more free throw before the buzzer to end the quarter, chasing 14-21.

  • As the Huskies began to find their stride, at the 6-minute mark of the second, Tea DeMong would make a HUGE three to fuel the Huskies' momentum, forcing the Cougars to call a timeout to regroup.

  • With a minute and a half left to play in the first, Carly Ahmstom would make a three, followed by a jumper to bring the Huskies within 2. The Cougars would respond with a layup, but Logan Reider would respond immediately to keep the Huskies within two to end the half 35-37 in favour of Regina.

  • With six minutes to play in the third, Carly Armstrong would get through the traffic in the key and make a layup to tie the game at 43.

  • A three-pointer from Carley Ahlmstrom with two minutes left in the fourth quarter would bring the Huskies within three, but the Cougars would throw a three up in return to return to a 6-point difference, 66-60.

  • The quarter's final minutes would be tight, with the Huskies desperately pushing to close the gap, but the Cougars would come out on top at the sound of the final buzzer.
