SASKATOON, Sask. - Fans at Merlis Belsher Place Saturday night witnessed the most lopsided win of the season for the U SPORTS No. 7-ranked Saskatchewan Huskie men's hockey team, who earned a dominant 10-2 victory over the visiting MacEwan Griffins.
The game saw eight different Huskie student-athletes with double-digit point nights and fifteen make it onto the scoresheet. Third-year forward
Liam Keeler and fourth-year blueliner
Gunner Kinniburgh led the way with four points each while
Ben Tkachuk and
Raphael Pelletier recorded three.
In net, the Huskies saw another standout performance from veteran netminder
Roddy Ross who made consecutive starts for the first time this season. After recording a shutout Friday night against the Griffins, Ross saw his streak of perfection between the pipes come to an end at just over 72 minutes of hockey. Outside of a 22 second stretch in the first, the Meadow Lake product stood strong in the crease, turning aside 23 of 25 shots faced.
The first period saw plenty of fireworks as the Huskies opened the scoring with goals from
Liam Keeler and
Ben Tkachuk who both scored their first of two in the blowout win. For Keeler, his first came just 31 seconds into the game as he kicked off Huskie Athletics' annual Toque and Mitt toss in support of local children in the Saskatoon community.
The Griffins responded with a fast and furious burst which saw two goals in just 22 seconds from Kadyn Chabot and Carter Corney to tie things up. Prior to the end of the period
Carter Stebbings would recapture the lead as the two teams headed for the locker rooms.
Just 16 seconds in the frame, Keeler once again produced a hot start, netting his second of the game as the forward fired a wrist shot coming into the zone on the wing. Keeler's second was the first of five scores for the Dogs in the period which saw
Keaton Sorensen,
Vince Loschiavo,
Justin Ball, and
Chantz Petruic all find the back of the net.
Ball and Petruic each scored on Saskatchewan powerplays which converted on four of five opportunities as the unit continues to be the best in the conference with an incredible 32.3% success rate.
As things slowed down in the third, Saskatchewan was held to just two goals with
Raphael Pelletier and Tkachuk each adding to the impressive special teams outing.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 12-4-0 just past the halfway point of the season. The Dogs also keep pace with the division-leading Alberta Golden Bears, who sit just two points ahead of Saskatchewan in the Canada West standings. The Huskies now head to the winter break and will return to action on January 10 and 11 as they take on provincial rivals, the Regina Cougars.
