Two-goal Second Period Lifts Pandas Past Huskies

SASKATOON, Sask. - The U SPORTS No. 6-ranked Alberta Pandas scored twice in the second period for a comeback win against the Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night (Nov. 23) at Merlis Belsher Place in a Canada West CBC game of the week.

The Alberta comeback took just over three minutes to start after the Huskies opened the scoring late in the first. The visiting team would tie things up at the 1:56 mark of the second period before controlling the pace of play for the vast majority of remaining time. Once reason for the Alberta victory was another lopsided performance in the shot department which featured an impressive 12-0 advantage in the third to lead the Pandas to a 33-12 total by the end of the third.

The Pandas saw Chase Melnyk score her first on the season in addition to Jadynn Morden who found the back of the net for the fourth time in 2024-25. For the Huskies, their lone goal scorer was McKenna Bolger who recorded her first of the campaign.

In net for the visiting team, Misty Rey earned her third win of the campaign with an 11 save performance which included two periods of shutout hockey.

At the other end of the ice, Colby Wilson provided a strong presence between the pipes in her ninth start of the season. Despite the final score, the fourth-year product of Fort St. James, BC, also played two periods without allowing a score and turned aside 31 of the 33 shots she faced. Facing the second-most shots of any netminder this season, Wilson holds a 2.52 goals against average and .914 save percentage.

After being shutout last night, the Dogs were looking to get things going early and earned a first-minute powerplay opportunity for their efforts. While the game remained scoreless after the Alberta penalty kill, the Huskies remained on the attack looking to capitalize. Following a late Pandas slashing call, the Dogs were back on the advantage and with seconds remaining in both the powerplay and period, Bronwyn Boucher sent a tape-to-tape pass to McKenna Bolger in the slot who made no mistake, giving Saskatchewan the lead.

Unfortunately, the lead was short lived as less than two minutes into the second an unassisted goal from Chase Melnyk tied the game. Midway through the period the Pandas then scored the would-be game winner when Jaydnn Morden converted on a powerplay opportunity.

Despite their best efforts, the Alberta defence would shutdown any hope of game tying goal, stopping all scoring chances and holding the Huskies to zero shots on net in the third.

With the win, the Pandas improve to 11-3-0 on the season and take a four-point lead over the Canada West East Division, while Saskatchewan drops to 0-10-4.

Next weekend, the Huskies will close out the fall semester on the road in Edmonton with a two game series against the MacEwan Griffins. The Pandas meanwhile, head home and will take on the Mount Royal Cougars.
