EDMONTON, Alta. - Connor McClennon scored three, including both the Teddy Bear Toss goal in the first and the insurance marker into the empty net in the third, powering the Alberta Golden Bears to a 4-2 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies.
McClennon opened the scoring just five minutes into the first, followed by a pair of goals in the third period, as the Bears picked up their fifth-straight win, and third over Saskatchewan already this season. Josh Prokop scored the game-winner on a breakaway midway through the third, while Ethan Kruger stopped 20 of the 22 Saskatchewan shots he faced in the victory. The win sees Alberta improve to a conference-best 12-1-0.
Trevor Wong and
Chantz Petruic scored for Saskatchewan, who dropped to 9-4-0 with the loss, their third at Clare Drake Arena in 2024-25.
Friday marked McClennon's best game as a Bear by far, with it being his first multi-goal game of his varsity career, and second multi-point performance of the season. His first goal sent the nearly-sold out Clare Drake Arena crowd into a frenzy, sending hundreds of stuffed animals on the ice.
Kruger stopped all 11 Saskatchewan shots he faced in the opening period, as the third-year Bear picked up his seventh win in his seventh start this season.
Wong leveled the game in the second, finishing off a perfect tic-tac-toe Huskie passing play in tight.
Carter Stebbings set up the Wong goal, who tapped in the cross-ice feed. Kruger was stellar in the second frame, as he made a pair of breakway saves to keep the game tied.
McClennon restored the Alberta lead early in the third, beating
Roddy Ross on a rebound tight on his blocker side. Prokop doubled the Alberta lead midway through the third, beating Ross with a snap-shot on a breakaway.
Petruic gave the Huskies hope late, tapping in a mad scramble in the crease for his sixth of the season. Saskatchewan's late-game surge was ended with McClennon's third of the game into the empty net.
The two rivals will meet again tomorrow night at 8:00 PM CST.
