SASKATOON, Sask. - In search of their first win of the season, the Huskies welcomed the winless Alberta Golden Bears to the Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court at the Physical Activity Complex Friday night. Alberta's Isaac Simon had other ideas, as the former Saskatchewan Rattler recorded a game-high 28-points to lead the visiting Golden Bears to their first win of the 2024-25 campaign.
Despite the final score, fans in attendance saw a tightly contested match between a pair of teams looking to get into the win column for the first time. Alberta jumped out to a 11-point lead at the end of the opening quarter before things settled down and the two teams traded blows, until late in the third frame when the Dogs cut the Golden Bear advantage to just six.
Despite their best efforts, a score from Nash Semeniuk and a triple with just seconds left in the third from Fahad Yusuf saw Alberta stretch their lead to eight heading into the fourth.
From there, the Bears extended the Huskie deficit to 11 before the Dogs once again showed some life at the offensive end of the court. From there, foul trouble would see the Huskies send three shooters to the charity stripe while allowing 12 points to Isaac in the final frame, eliminating any chance of a late-game comeback and sealing the Alberta win.
In addition to the former Rattler, Kyle Varner and Nate Waldron reach double-digit points for the visiting team with 10-points each while
Owen Murphy Wiebe and
Dylan Miller surpassed that mark for the Huskies, totaling 10 and 11 in the contest.
Friday's game also marked just the second time this season in which
Easton Thimm failed to record a double-double with the Bears holding the reigning Rookie of the Year to just six points and six rebounds.
