SASKATOON, Sask. -
Dawson Holt totaled four points with a goal and three assists to help guide the Saskatchewan Huskie men's hockey team to a dominant 7-1 win against the Regina Cougars in their regular season opener Friday night (Oct. 4) at Merlis Belsher Place.
In their first period of the season the Huskies put on an impressive performance which carried them through the opening frame. Four different Dogs capitalized on scoring opportunities, with second-year forward
Ben Tkachuk scoring the season's first goal. Blueliner
Cade Hayes would then double lead after making a nice move in tight to get the puck around Regina goalie Jackson Fellner.
Raphael Pelletier and
Chantz Petruic then stretched the lead to four heading into the first intermission.
The second period would see the first power-play strike of the season from the Huskies when
Carter Stebbings found
Dawson Holt in the slot for his second point of the evening. Late in the period
Roddy Ross would see his shutout effort end after Regina's Steven Kesslering recorded the Cougars first goal of the campaign.
Despite losing the shutout it was a strong start to the season for the veteran netminder who finished the game with 24 saves on his way to the win.
Carter Stebbings and
Chantz Petruic would add the 6th and 7th goals in the third to solidify the lopsided victory on opening night.
In total, 10 Huskies recorded a point with
Chantz Petruic,
Parker Gavlas,
Carter Stebbings,
Dawson Holt, and
Cade Hayes all putting in multi-point performances.
The Dogs will look to start the season with a back-to-back wins as they head to Regina for the second game of a home-and-home series with the Cougars to start the season. Puck drop from the Co-operators Centre is set for 7:00 PM. Fans unable to attend can catch the action all season long at
