Huskies Look to Close out Regular Season with A Fourth Consecutive Win

For the second consecutive week, the University of Saskatchewan Huskie Football team will take on an opponent for the second time this season. Following a tightly-contested win against the Regina Rams last weekend, the Dogs now head to Alberta and mores specifically, McMahon Stadium, for their regular season finale against the Calgary Dinos.

In their previous meeting this season the Huskies captured a 44-40 double-overtime victory in a thrilling shootout which also served as USask's 2024 Homecoming game. The game saw nearly 1,000 yards of offence and seven majors before headed to extra time. In overtime, both teams traded field goals before Javin Boynton ran in a 3-yard score to secure the Huskie win.

Since that game on September 13, both teams have experienced very different season. The Huskies, who struggled early in the season, are now the winners of three straight, defeating the U SPORTS No. 9-ranked Alberta Golden Bears, the No. 7-ranked Manitoba Bisons, and provincial rival the Regina Rams. Meanwhile the Dinos lost three straight by a combined 11 points before suffering a 21-5 loss at UBC last week. In that game, the Dinos failed to score an offensive point (1 rouge, 2 safeties) and were held to just 180 yards of total offence.

The key matchup on Saturday will once again be the Huskies offence going up against a strong secondary in the Dinos. The Saskatchewan offence continues to stand alone at the top of the Canada West rankings averaging 31.0 points per game and 444.7 yards per game and will go up against a Calgary defence allowing 26.4 points per game and the second fewest yards per game (388.7).

On the other side of the ball the Huskie defence, which is coming off their best performance of the season, will look to take advantage of a struggling Calgary offence which ranks 3rd in passing and 5th in rushing in Canada West.

Key Stats
  • In their meeting earlier this season the Huskies ran the ball for 291 yards and five touchdowns, both season-highs for the Dogs. 224 of those yards and three touchdowns came from running back Ryker Frank
  • The Huskies continue to be one of the most productive teams in the country on offense, averaging 31.0 points per game and 444.7 yards per game (both 1st in CW) while converting on 92% of trips to the redzone.
  • Despite their record, the Dinos defence is one of the best in the conference and is tied for 1st in generating turnovers with 15 on the season (10 INT, 5 FR).
  • Calgary's offence continues to struggle in the redzone this season, converting just 78% of their attempts into points and only 39% into touchdowns.

Looking Ahead

Following Saturday's season finale, the Huskies will turn their attention to the postseason and likely, the UBC Thunderbirds. With the Huskies locked into the No. 3 seed in Canada West, they must await the results of UBC's matchup with the Manitoba Bisons in Week 8. If the Unless the Thunderbirds can defeat the Bisons by a margin of 23-point or more, Saskatchewan will head to Vancouver for the HArdy Cup Semifinals.
