Huskies Fall in Friday Night Matchup with Calgary

SASKATOON, Sask. –  A late short-handed goal from Calgary's Jess Martens with 2:31 left to play would decide game one of two of the weekend series between the Saskatchewan Huskies (0-3-0-0) and Calgary Dinos (1-1-0-1), followed by two open net goals to ensure the Dinos victory.

After a slow start in the first, Dino defender, and local Saskatoon product, Kate Wagner found her name at the top of the scoresheet at 10:46. Wagner scored her first goal of the season, making it a 1-0 game in favour of the Dinos headed into the second period. Calgary's Brooklyn Anderson and Kyla Mitenko would each collect a point off the goal. The slow start was reflected through shots on goal, the two teams putting up a combined 11 shots after the first 20 minutes.

Although the second period saw an increase in shot attempts from both teams, the score would remain 1-0 Dinos heading into the final frame.

After numerous scoring chances, fourth-year defenseman Kendra Zuchotski got the Huskies on the board just shy of seven minutes into the third, tying up the game with a quick one-timer from the blue line, courtesy of a slick feed from Bronwyn Boucher.

Both teams continued to fight end line to end line for the remaining duration of the third, looking to capitalize on any open scoring opportunity and avoid overtime. It was Calgary's Jess Martens who would be the one to break the tie, after receiving the pass from Rebecca Clarke, Martens fired a shot that beat Huskies' freshman goaltender, Clara Juca, making it 2-1 Dinos.

The Huskies continued to push, but Sydney Mercier would knock home the insurance goal for Calgary with 1:56 left to play, and Sophia Zuck would add on another to call the game for the Dinos with 6.9 seconds remaining, securing the Dinos first win of the season.
