MHKY: Huskies Fall to Golden Bears in OT

SETTING THE STAGE
The Saskatchewan Huskies played host to the rival Alberta Golden Bears Saturday night at Merlis Belsher Place after a 4-2 win last night and 2-1 series.  The Golden Bears came into the game looking to slow down the red hot Huskies. 
 
In front of 1532 boisterous Huskies fans last night the home team spent a considerable amount of time in the penalty box, but scored shorthanded and skated to a 4-2 win.
 
Coming into the game the Huskies sported a record of 16-5, riding a streak of five straight wins and 7-3 in their last 10.  The Bears were 15-8 and 7-2-1 in their last 10.   Coming into the game the Huskies and Bears shared 3rd place in Canada West standings.  The Huskies were undefeated in 2024 coming into today's game having swept both Regina, MacEwan and last night's win. 
 
The Huskies and Bears have a long history of epic games, though the overall advantage belongs to the Golden Bears.  The Bears have a 98-42-2 conference play record versus the Huskies since 1973.  The Huskies are 35-52-3 on home ice versus their northern rival since that same time frame.
 
On home ice the Huskies are 7-4 thus far in the 2023-2024 season, while the Golden Bears are 6-5 on the road.
 
SASKATOON, SK – In back-to-back games, Jordan Kooy (2.26 GAA) got the start in net for the Huskies, while the Bears countered with Ethan Kruger (2.83 GAA).  Tonight was Jordans 5th straight start for the Huskies.

Both goalkeepers were brilliant between the pipes.  The game featured alot of special teams, posts, cross bars and edge of your seat action.  The Golden Bears scored in the opening frame, the Huskies in the final frame, before the Golden Bears sniped late to give the visiting team the 2-1 OT win.
 
THE HIGHLIGHTS
  • In just his fourth game as a Bear, Connor McClennon (1) opened the scoring for the Alberta Golden Bears at 9:21 of the first period to give the visiting team the 1-0 lead.  Was Connors' first U SPORTS goal and point.
  • Jordan Kooy made a number of brilliant saves in the second period while the Golden Bears had the man-advantage, Chantz Petruic was in the penalty box for a high-sticking double minor. 
  • Saskatchewan's Justin Ball (11) tied it up 4:42 into the final frame when he dashed down the wing and went five-hole on Ethan Kruger. 
  • Moments later the Huskies ripped the puck behind Kruger, but off the Golden Bears crossbar.  The game remained tied 1-1.
  • In what was a thrilling third period of action up and down the ice, the score remained tied 1-1 heading into overtime.
  • With seconds left in the third period the Huskies Vince Loschiavo took a high sticking penalty to give the Golden Bears the power-play heading into overtime.  However, the power-play didn't last long as Alberta's Justin Prokop took a hooking penalty just :40 seconds into the extra frame to eliminate the man-advantage.
  • With 1:57 left in overtime the Huskies Vince Loschiavo took a hooking penalty to give the Golden Bears the advantage with 1:57 left in overtime.
  • On the power play, with :38 seconds left on the clock Golden Bears Eric Florchuk (10) lit the lamp and earned the win for the visiting team.
THE STATS
  • Tonight's Huskie loss snapped their win streak at five games, and stopped the Golden Bears losing streak at 2. 
  • Final shots on goal were 32-26 in favor of the hometown Huskies.
  • The Huskies were 0/5 with the man-advantage, while the Golden Bears went 1/5.  The Game Winner.
  • Tonight's attendance at Merlis Belsher Place was 1547.
THE STANDINGS
Following tonight's game the Saskatchewan Huskies record stands at 16-6, with the Golden Bears at 16-8 in Canada West standings.
