FB: Huskies Improve to 3-1 with Dominant Fourth Quarter Performance

FINAL SCORE
Saskatchewan Huskies – 28
Calgary Dinos – 12

CALGARY, AB - Saskatchewan's running backs were unstoppable in the fourth quarter as touchdowns from Ryker Frank and Ted Kubongo led the Huskies to a 28-12 win over the Calgary Dinos. The Huskies improve to 3-1 in Canada West while the loss sends the Dinos to 0-4.

The Huskies opened scoring on the first drive of the game as David Solie took the opening kickoff, punting it straight through the Calgary end zone to take a 1-0 lead. Late in the first quarter, Calgary's Nate Beauchemin picked off a pass from Anton Amundrud, running it back 33 yards for the touchdown and the 7-1 lead. The Huskies would end the quarter trailing by six.

Midway through the second quarter, Solie's 42 yard field goal attempt sailed through the uprights to bring the Huskies within three but it was an incredible interception from Nixen Voll that would turn the tide. Voll shut down Vaillncourt's pass attempt, running it back 30 yards for the touchdown, putting the Huskies up 11-7. Saskatchewan would give up a safety late in the quarter and head into the half with a 11-9 lead over the Dinos.

"Defense is playing awesome, but we need to be better on offence", said Head Coach Scott Flory during halftime. Saskatchewan had 104 net yards passing after two quarters, with Amundrud going 12 for 19 with two interceptions.

Solie continued to thrive as the Huskies opened scoring in the second half, hitting a 36 yard field goal five minutes into the third. The field goal would be the only scoring in the quarter and Saskatchewan headed into the home stretch with a 14-9 lead.

A Calgary field goal from Vince Triumbari brought the Dinos within striking distance, but it was all Huskies as the offence hit their stride in the fourth quarter, thanks to an impressive run game. Third year running back Ryker Frank would grab the first offensive touchdown of the game, plowing through a solid defensive line in the red zone to extend the Huskies lead 21-12. Ted Kubongo's highlight worthy leap into the end zone with five minutes left in the game would seal the deal for Saskatchewan.

While the Huskies offense had a slow start to the game, the defense never wavered. Defensive lineman Nathan Jule led the team with five solo tackles and one assisted. Linebacker Nick Wiebe added three solo tackles and five assisted, proving why he is one of the top defenders in U SPORTS.
