MSOC: Huskies Drop Season Opener to Griffins

EDMONTON, AB - It has been a long off-season and the Huskie men's soccer team was excited to get the 2023 season started. Heading to Edmonton to take on the MacEwan Griffins in their season opener, Saskatchewan had some incredible offensive opportunities, but were unable to close things out as the Griffins took the 3-2 win. 

STARTERS
The Huskies would go with Jaron Slopinski in goal, with Zach Edwards, Robert Woodroffe-Brown, Diego Reveco, Ahmed Mohammed, Luke Mackie, Robert Mackay, Sergio Molina, Joshua Malin, Daler Tokhirov, and Misgana Killoh suiting up on the field. 
 
In goal for MacEwan would be David Sithole, supported on the field by Ernest Sungura-Bilebwa, Jakob Sievert, Abass Ajibade, Ali Yildiz, Nicolas Luczkiewicz, Shameiks McLeod, Abhiroop Sandhu, Felix Guite, Sami Vieira, and Philip Masri. 
 
GAME NOTES
The first half would see impressive offensive efforts from the Huskies, thanks to two shots on goal from Daler Tokhirov, alongside Ahmed Mohammed and Robert Woodroffe-Brown. MacEwan would strike first, as Antony Caceres would slide one past Huskie goalkeeper Jaron Slopinski twenty-two minutes into the half. He would net his second goal of the game at 30:35 to give the Griffins the 2-0 lead. 
 
Saskatchewan would answer ten minutes later, with a beauty of a shot from second year winger Ethan Cabral to put the Huskies on the scoreboard, narrowing the MacEwan lead by one. 2-1 Griffins would be the score heading into halftime. 
 
The Huskies offense would be persistent in the second half, with shots on goal from Daler Tokhirov, Zach Edwards and Misgana Killoh, before Robert Woodroffe-Brown would find the back of the net and tie the game for the Huskies at 2-2. Four minutes later, MacEwan's Philip Masri would nab the game winning goal, giving them the win at 3-2. 
 
Scoring two goals for MacEwan, Antony Caceres would be named MVP for the Griffins, with Diego Reveco being named Huskies MVP, thanks to his stellar defensive efforts.
