SASKATOON, SK – The Saskatchewan Huskies completed their final regular season weekend at home with a clean sweep of the Alberta Panda. Saturday night final score was 79-67 in favour of the Dogs.
The starting five for the Huskies consisted of
Logan Reider,
Carly Ahlstrom, Tea Demong,
Gage Grassick, and
Kyla Shand. Down the court, the Pandas starters were Shae McCusker, Jenna Harpe, Emma Kary, Morgan Harris and Claire Signatovich.
The Huskies came out hot in the first quarter, shooting 57.1% from the field compared the Panda 45%. The beginning was all Sask as they led 14-6 after the first 5 minutes. The Pandas would respond to carry an 15-8 scoring run to come within reach. However, the Huskies managed to maintain a 22-21 lead after the opening frame.
The second quarter evened out offensively with four lead changes. The Huskies shot an impressive 45.5% from beyond the arch compared to the Pandas 14.3%. Despite struggling from depth, the Pandas came out on top. Saskatchewan went into the half time break at a 37-40 deficit.
Alberta's Head Coach Scott Edwards made some adjustments during halftime and led a focused Pandas team out to start the second half. The Pandas stayed within 3 points during the first five minutes of the second half and then dropped off defensively.
Carly Ahlstrom shot 57.1% from the field and managed to add in 14 points of her own this quarter. The Dogs closed the third 61-55.
The fourth quarter remained in the hands of the Huskies as they held the lead throughout. The Huskies ultimately took the contest 79-67.
Leading the Huskies was
Carly Ahlstrom with 28 points, 8 assists and 8 rebounds. The Pandas were led by Jenna Harpe who racked up 17 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists.
