MHKY: Calgary Overpowers Saskatchewan 5-2

SASKATOON, SK – Sitting in second place in the Canada West standings, the Saskatchewan Huskies (9-1) welcomed the third place Calgary Dinos (7-2) to Merlis Belsher Place on Friday night. Saskatchewan would suffer just their second loss of the season, as they dropped a 5-2 decision to Calgary.

Calgary hits the scoreboard first just under two minutes into the game, with a quick snipe from first year forward Jake Poole. The unassisted goal gave the Dinos the 1-0 lead early in the first period.

Extending Calgary's lead was third year forward Jake Gricius, who shot one past Roddy Ross into the top right corner of the net. Zach Wytnick and Jadon Joseph would both nab assists on the power play goal.

The Dinos would not let up, capitalizing yet again on the power play with a goal from third year forward Jaeger White, his second of the season, at 12:43 into the period, increasing the Calgary lead 3-0. Saskatchewan Head Coach Brandin Cote would make a change in net after Calgary's third goal, with third year Jordan Kooy heading into net for the Dogs.

Closing out the first period would be second year forward Carter Stebbings, who was perfectly positioned in front of Calgary goaltender Carl Stankowski to take the pass in from Rhett Rhinehart and Cade Hayes, nabbing his fourth goal of the season. Heading into the first intermission, the Dinos led the Huskies 3-1.

Calgary struck first in the second, with third year forward Colson Gengenbach netting his ninth goal of the season at 3:42 into the period. Three minutes later, Gengenbach would again find his way past Kooy, with the assist from Adam Kydd, to give the Dinos a commanding 5-1 lead.

Josh Pillar would add the second goal of the game for the Huskies at 15:44 into the period, with assists from Chantz Petruic and Dawson Holt. Saskatchewan would head into the second intermission trailing 5-2.

Scoring would end in the second period, as the third was very much a defensive battle. With no scoring and no penalties until the last minute of play, the game would end with a 5-2 win for the Dinos.

With the loss, the Huskies now have a 9-2 record, while the Dinos improve to 8-2.
