MHKY: Huskies Win Shootout Thriller Against MacEwan

SASKATOON, SK – The home opening series against the MacEwan Griffins continued Saturday afternoon at Merlis Belsher Place. The Huskies dominated opening night Friday with a convincing 6-2 win and remain undefeated after a 2-1 shootout victory in Saskatoon.

Roddy Ross got the start in net for the Huskies, after an impressive performance on Friday night from third year netminder Jordan Kooy. MacEwan would also have a new face in goal on Saturday afternoon, with Thomas Davis in net over Ashton Abel.

The pace of Saturday afternoon's game was slower than Friday night, with both teams struggling to find the net in the first period. MacEwan's decision to go with Davis in net would prove to be the right one, as he stopped 12 shots on goal from the Huskies offence.

MacEwan's Loeden Schaufler had the best opportunity in the first, with a wicked slap shot that was stopped cold by Saskatchewan's Roddy Ross. Teams would head into the first break scoreless, with the Huskies outshooting the Griffins 12-4.

Early into the second period, Justin Ball proved his worth with an unassisted shorthanded goal to put the Huskies on the board. Two minutes later, MacEwan would answer with a goal of their own from second year Ethan Strang. The game would head into the second intermission tied at 1-1, with the Huskies leading the Griffins in shots on goal 18-15.

Saturday's matchup would prove to be a heated one, with Saskatchewan taking seven penalties to MacEwan's four. The third period was gritty, with both teams unable to find the back of the net, sending the game into overtime tied at 1-1.

Updated Canada West overtime rules now sees the teams playing a five minute 3 on 3 period followed by a shootout. The overtime period proved to be scoreless, despite multiple shots from both teams, sending the game to a shootout.

The shootout would go five rounds, with Ross and Davis both making some incredible saves. It was Saskatchewan's Carter Stebbings who would finally drive one past Davis for the win.
