SASKATOON, SK – The Saskatchewan Huskies faced the Trinity Western Spartans on Saturday afternoon at Merlis Belsher Place in game two of their weekend series. After an impressive 5-0 win on Friday night, the Huskies were looking to continue that momentum for another win.
It was a successful afternoon for the Dogs, who walked away with the 5-0 win and the weekend sweep of the Spartans.
Saskatchewan wasted little time getting started offensively. Colby Jaquet had his first goal of the season three minutes into the first period, with assists from Jeffrey Faith and Mark Rumsey.
Around the six-minute mark, a skirmish in front of Trinity Western's net would send Spartans' goaltender Raphael Audet to the dressing room with an apparent injury. Leon Sommer would take Audet's place, returning to the net after starting Friday's game. Saskatchewan's Cade Hayes served a two-minute minor for goaltender interference on the play.
In the final minutes of the first period, a pass from Shane Collins would find Vince Loschiavo's stick. Loschiavo fired it past Sommer, giving the Huskies the 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
After being named Huskie Athlete of the Week, Raphael Pelletier continued to show his dominance on the ice after a turnover at Trinity Western's blue line resulted in an impressive breakaway goal, his fifth of the season. His goal would be the only one in the period, extending the Huskies lead 3-0 heading into the third.
Picking up his fourth goal of the season was Dawson Holt midway through the third. The powerplay goal was assisted by Chantz Petruic and Mac Gross.
Loschiavo continued to be an offensive threat in the third period, notching his sixth goal of the season on a powerplay at 16:38. The goal was assisted by Colby Jaquet (his sixth of the year) and Carter Stebbings (his second).
The Huskies remain undefeated so far this season with a perfect 8-0 record. They sit two points below UBC in the Canada West standings in second place. The losses move Trinity Western to 0-8 and last place in Canada West.
Saskatchewan has yet to lose to TWU since the team joined the league in 2021, winning all eight matchups, outscoring the Spartans 53-19.
