SASKATOON – The Huskies (1-7) were back at home to open the second half of the season take on the visiting TRU Wolfpack (3-5).
The Huskies were unable to find a groove to open 2023 as they fell to the visiting TRU Wolfpack.
It was the three-ball dropping early for the Huskies as
Tyrese Potoma hitting a three to open the scoring up for the Huskies, before
Fisayo Moibi hit threes on back-to-back possessions to put the Dogs up 9-7 early. Moibi was the spark plug for the Huskies offence to start 2023 leading the team with 9 points in the first quarter. Saskatchewan saw a slim 24-22 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
The second quarter saw more back and forth action between TRU and the Dogs. It was the Wolfpack going on a roll in the second going up 42-34 before head coach
Jamie Campbell called a timeout.
Potoma was facilitating for Saskatchewan early with 6 assists in the first half.
Alexander Dewar had 9 points in the quarter for the Huskies bit it was the Wolfpack leading at the half thanks to a 28-18 run in the quarter.
The third quarter saw both teams trading baskets but saw the Huskies cut into the lead late.
Noah Nickel and
Cameron Wright hit threes late in the quarter to cut the lead to four heading into the final quarter.
Saskatchewan started off the fourth hungry with Potoma connecting from deep before
Maxwell Amoafo went one for two from the line saw the Huskies tie it at 69-69. The Wolfpack were unwilling to fold going up 76-71 with five minutes left in the quarter.
Thompson River was too much for the Huskies to handle as the Huskies comeback fell short 85-79. This is the Huskies eighth straight loss and will look to turn it around here in the second half to make a push back to the playoffs after winning a U SPORTS silver medal last season.
Saskatchewan was led by
Alexander Dewar who had a game high 31 points. Potoma had a double-double for the Huskies with 11 points and 11 assists while Amoafo chipped in with 9 rebounds. Cyrus Harrison had a team high 20 for the Wolfpack while Denys Bachurin and Thomas Olsen had 8 rebounds apiece. Bachurin also had a team high five assists.
