SASKATOON – The inaugural game of the U Prairie Challenge between the University of Regina Cougars and University of Saskatchewan Huskies was a high-scoring energetic contest between the two provincial rivals.
A back-and-forth affair ended in last minute heroics by second year forward
Alyssa D'Agnone as she tied the game 3-3 in the 90
th minute.
D'Agnone notched a brace on the evening , recording the first and final goals of the game. The Huskies jumped out to the lead in the 24
th minute off a D'Agnone goal. It didn't take the Cougars long to respond as Taylor Bubnick recorded her first of two goals on the night in the 38
th minute.
Bubnick game out firing out of the half-time break, scoring her second goal of the evening in the 60
th minute.
With the Cougars leading 2-1, it was the Huskies
Payton Izsak who was able to convert on a free kick to tie the game at 2. The fourth-year midfielder curled her shot into the top corner of the net which brought the 500 fans in attendance to their feet.
Five minutes later, it was the Cougars Peyton Enns who scored a rocket from distance to put the Cougars up for the second time in the game.
The Huskies had plenty of opportunities to tie the game before D'Agnone capitalized on a loose ball to end the game in a draw.
The Cougars Allyson Ford recorded eight saves on the night, while the Huskies
Nadia Kalyar made her second straight start for the Dogs and recorded four saves.
Huskie head coach
Jerson Barandica-Hamilton admired his team's resiliency to come back from deficits, twice.
"We told the girls that they needed to learn some of the lessons from last week and stay composed and keep playing and I thought they did that towards the end," said Barandica-Hamilton. "We didn't ever panic. We kept believing in our style of play, happy to tie it, but disappointed that we gave up three, in my opinion, really preventable goals. This was such a winnable game. So, we still have to work on little details, but really happy with some of the performances."
"
Payton Izsak was unbelievable tonight, a true captain. Alyssa is starting to find her groove at this level. We're still young and we're learning a lot of lessons, but I think we took a big step in not giving up and tying the game today."
The Huskies next game will go on September 9 when they face the UBCO Heat in Kelowna. All Canada West games can be watched on CanadaWest.TV
