SASKATOON, SK – The Saskatchewan Huskies hosted their last game of 2022 at Merlis Belsher Place this afternoon against the Calgary Dinos.
After a 5-4 double overtime loss to the Dinos last night, the Huskies were looking to end the year on a high note. Ultimately, the Huskies would be unsuccessful as they once again fell in double overtime to the Dinos 3-2.
The first period was very much a defensive battle with both teams struggling to get shots on net. The period would end with a 0-0 tie, with the Huskies leading shots on goal 9-8.
The energy ramped up in the second period as Saskatchewan would be first to score, with Alec Zawatzky picking up his third of the season, assisted by
Jared Dmytriw and
Chantz Petruic at 15:18 into the period. The Dinos offence would not be able to find the scoreboard and the Huskies would head into the third period with the 1-0 lead.
Saskatchewan's defence was tested in the third period, as the Dinos would slip two goals past
Jordan Kooy. At 8:48, Calgary's Zach Wytinck would get the powerplay goal, assisted by Jake Gricius and Jadon Joseph. They would again capitalize on the powerplay at 12:02 with an unassisted goal from Noah King. Saskatchewan's
Justin Ball answered back a minute and a half later at 13:32 with the power play goal, pushing the game into overtime.
Tied at 2-2 in overtime, Calgary and Saskatchewan would both struggle to find the net, much like in Friday night's game. The game would go into a second overtime, which was ended at 1:54 with a goal from Calgary's Noah King to take 3-2 win for the Dinos.
The Huskies would go with
Jordan Kooy in net tonight, splitting the weekend in terms of goaltending, with
Roddy Ross in net for all of Friday's Game. Calgary would once again have Carl Tetachuk in net.
Heading into the winter break, the Huskies sit at fourth place in Canada West with a 10-4 record. The Dinos maintain first place with a 15-3 record.
Saskatchewan will start the new year on the road on January 6 & 7, 2023 against the Trinity Western Spartans in Langley, BC. Live stream is available on
