Huskies ride to double-digit victory over Bisons

SASKATOON- The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men's basketball team outlasted the Manitoba Bisons 78-66 on Saturday night at the Physical Activity Complex.

Third-year guard Marquavian Stephens led the Huskies in scoring with 19 points. Third-year forward Kessler Bishop recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds in just over eighteen minutes of playing time.

The sweep was made possible following a 83-64 win over the Bisons on Friday night. With the pair of wins, Saskatchewan improved to 5-3 on the season, while Manitoba is set to enter 2022 with a matching 5-3 record, as both programs along with Regina sit tied atop of the Canada West's east division.

"I got into a rhythm. Last night I got two quick fouls so I wasn't able to play much in the first half. Coming into tonight, I played smarter and got into a rhythm rebounding," said Okotoks native Kessler Bishop.

After trailing the first quarter by three points, the Huskies outscored the Bisons 62-47 in the remaining three periods. The Huskies' defensive effort generated scoring chances on the offensive end.

"We weren't shooting the ball well going into halftime so we had to find other ways to win. We found out how resilient we can be as a team," said Head Coach Barry Rawlyk. "We've been trying to find our identity throughout the first part of this season as well as trying to find the right chemistry with our players. I think we're still a work in progress but I do think we are arriving to where we want to be."

For the Bisons, Elijah Lostracco came off of the bench to lead all scorers with 20 points. James Wagner and Mason Kraus added 17 points each in the loss.

The Dogs will be back on court January 21, 2022 to play the Brandon Bobcats at the PAC, while the Bisons next will play rival Winnipeg Wesmen on January 15.
