SASKATOON- The University of Saskatchewan Huskies fell in a battle against their provincial rival Regina Cougars by a score of 82-74 on Saturday night at the Physical Activity Complex.
Saskatchewan led by seven though three quarters of play, but the fourth was a different story.Â
The Cougars outscored the Huskies 34-19 in the fourth, with Benjamin Hillis registering 17 of those 34.
After a 25-point performance on Friday, Hillis had more up his sleeve on Saturday. The fifth-year guard was instrumental in the comeback, shooting 5-10 from beyond-the-arc to record her second-straight 25-point outing.
"I wish I could say that some magical thing happened there," said Cougars head coach Steve Burrows in regard to the comeback. "Sometimes when it starts rolling downhill for you, then the basket gets a little bit bigger and Benny could have probably thrown it in over his head and that point."
Both Regina and Saskatchewan now sit at 2-2 after four games this season.Â
"Saskatchewan is a real good basketball team. They're fully deserving of the ranking that they got. We know how tough this place is to play in and how tough this place is to win in," said Burrows."
"Every game that you play in against these guys is going to be emotional. It's going to be physical. These guys all know each other."
Marquavian Stephens recorded his best night as a Huskie, racking up 23 points on the evening. Tyrese Potoma was the only other Saskatchewan scorer to hit double-digits, with a 15-point night on 6-15 from the field.Â
Saskatchewan did limit Carter Millar for the second-straight night, as the 2019-20 Canada West second-team all-star was held to five points.
"He was fairly quiet for us and we typically play through him and they took him away, so we needed some other guys to step up," said Burrows.
One of the guys that did step up was Brayden Kuski. Kuski was 4-7 from three-point range and had 18 points on the evening.Â
Regina is back in action next weekend as they continue their four-game road swing, as they head to Winnipeg for two meetings with the Manitoba Bisons.
The Huskies are not back in Canada West conference action until Nov. 26 and 27, when they meet again with the Cougars in the provincial capital.Â
However, the Huskies will take on the Lethbridge Pronghorns in the annual Ron & Jane Graham Shootout from AE Peacock Collegiate in Moose Jaw, as the green-and-white will use the bye-week to play an exhibition contest.
