Huskies Pick Up First Victory of the Season over Bisons

Saskatoon, SK (Nov. 13, 2021) – Dylan Mortensen led both teams with 18 kills on Saturday night as the Huskies picked up their first win of the season 3-1 (25-16, 25-17, 21-25, 25-21) over the Manitoba Bisons.

It was a tale of two very different games for the Huskies over the weekend. After dropping Friday night's game to Manitoba 3-1, the Huskies found their form on Saturday. The largest change to the Huskies play was displayed in the discrepancy in attack percentage for the team. On Friday night, the Huskies averaged .196, compared to Saturday night's .329. The Bisons hit at a .167 clip Saturday night.

The Dogs took the first two sets in convincing fashion off strong play from Mortensen and first-year Skyler Varga. Mortensen ended the game leading both teams in kills (18), aces (2, tied with Manitoba's Matthew Campbell) and digs (8).

"We went with a little different look lineup wise, moving (Dylan) Mortenson over the right. That seemed to stabilize our offense a little bit", said Huskies head coach Sean McKay. "We always try and find a spot for him. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but tonight it definitely worked and he really kind of ran away with that responsibility and that volume and really carried the team offensively."

The Bisons found their way back into the game in the third set as Ben Carleton was everywhere on the court, recording 13 kills on the night.

Ultimately, the Huskies were able to outlast a late Bisons push in the fourth, securing their first victory of the season.

Jack Mandryk of the Bisons and Mark Armstrong of the Huskies led their respective teams with 39 and 37 assists apiece.

The Huskies improve to 1-3 on the season whilst the Bisons even their record to 2-2.

The Dogs are back on the court on November 26, after a week off when they take on the Winnipeg Wesmen in Winnipeg. The Bisons will also return to action on the 26, when they travel to Brandon to take on the Bobcats.
