No. 2 ranked Huskies roll past Spartans

SASKATOON - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men's hockey team stayed undefeated, with a convincing 6-0 win over the visiting Trinity Western Spartans at Merlis Belsher Place.

In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, it was Saskatchewan from start-to-finish - as they outshot Trinity Western 44-14 and ran away with the contest following a three-goal second period.

The Huskies got goals from six different skaters including Brayden Camrud, who tallied his first-career U SPORTS goal. Justin Ball, Vince Loschiavo, Zane Franklin, Chantz Petruic and Jaxan Kaluski also all found the back of the net in the win.

Saskatchewan's powerplay has been sluggish to begin the season, with just one goal through four games entering the night, but they came alive tonight. The Huskies went 2-4 on the man-advantage.

I think playing simple," said Loschiavo, when asked about what the key was to the man-advantage. "It was definitely nice to get a couple, because the powerplay hasn't been where we've wanted it to be."

Roddy Ross made the stops he needed to make, en route to his first-career shutout in the green-and-white. Ross finished the evening with 14 stops.

Hometown kid Isaac Labelle earned the start between the pipes for the Spartans and he was peppered. He stood his ground, but in the end the Huskies offense was too much as they eventually got six past the Saskatoon product, who made 38 saves in the losing effort.

Trinity Western fell to 0-5-0 with the loss.

While Saskatchewan moved to 5-0-0, the focus for Huskies head coach Mike Babcock isn't on the record, but on improving.

I never thought about that much. The whole focus is to try to get better each and every day," said Babcock. "We like our product. We think we're getting better and that's all that matters."

After a scoreless first period that saw Saskatchewan outshoot Trinity Western 14-3, the Dogs pounced early in the middle frame. Zane Franklin struck just 18 seconds into the second, weaving through the Spartans zone and elevating his backhand over the left shoulder of Labelle to give the homeside the lead.

The Dogs kept it coming, as they struck twice more in the frame, before adding three more in the win.

The two programs will battle for the second-time in as many nights on Saturday evening at Merlis Belsher Place.
